1.       Passing of Dennis Hooey

It is with a heavy heart that Archery Canada announces the passing of Dennis Hooey (Lethbridge, AB), a true archery gentleman. Dennis was an avid archer, hunter, guide, camper, and fisherman. Dennis was a national and provincial champion archer who was inducted, along with his wife Jude, into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. 2.       2011 World Youth Archery Championship

2011 Senior Compound Men’s World Champion, Chris Perkins led a strong team of 18 young Canadian archers to the 2011 World Youth Archery Championship in Legnica, Poland, August 22-28. Canada’s young archers competed well and gained valuable international experience. This bodes well for the future for these young, up-and-coming archers.

The highlight for our Canadian Team was the Junior Men’s Compound Team, comprised of  Chris Perkins, Mike Kupchanko and Keenan Brown, standing atop the podium as they were presented the gold medal. In the gold medal match against the team from the Netherlands, the Canadian Team not only displayed great shooting but also true sportsmanship. A member of the Netherlands team had to be hospitalized for a minor injury prior to the start of the match. Rather than accept the gold medal by forfeit, the Canadian Team requested a delay in the match until the Netherlands team was complete and then shot the match at the end of the competition. A fine example of sportsmanship!

4.       2011 Shanghai World Cup

Canadian compound bow archer Dietmar Trillus (King City, ON) brought home the silver medal from this season’s 4th World Cup of Archery event which wrapped-up Sunday in Shanghai, China. The silver medal performance clinched a spot for Trillus in the World Cup final to be held in Istanbul, Turkey this September 24th -25th.

The World Cup of Archery series began in 2006. This year marks the 3rd time Trillus has qualified for the World Cup Final since he began to compete on the circuit in 2008.   He won the World Cup Final in 2008 and was crowned 2007 World Champion in the  Compound Bow category.

In the gold medal match, Trillus faced his long time rival, Reo Wilde of the United States. Wilde shot a perfect score of 150 points in the match. This year marks the first time since 2006 that Wilde has reached the World Cup Final. Trillus and Wilde will continue their rivalry in two weeks time in Istanbul.

“Unfortunately, I had an equipment failure in the 3rd end and missed the target with my final arrow of the end. “I wasn’t quite into my rhythm today but Wilde certainly was on top of his game, shooting all 10s.” said Trillus. He added: “As usual it is an honour and privilege to be able to participate with the best archers in the World. It is also an honour to represent Canada and be able to compete in the World Cup Final. I’m looking forward to it!”

Four other Canadian archers also competed at the Shanghai World Cup. Ashley Wallace (Redcliff, AB) and Vanessa Lee (Toronto, ON) competed in the Women’s individual Compound and Recurve Bow categories respectively. 6.       2011 Pan-American Games Team

Archery Canada is pleased to announce its team nominated to the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) to represent archery at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The archery competition for the 2011 edition of the Pan American Games will take place at the Pan American Archery Stadium from October 17 to 22, 2011.

“We are really excited to go into the Pan American Games with an excellent mix of experience and youth on our team,” said Scott Ogilvie, Executive Director for Archery Canada.

A total of 64 athletes (32 men and 32 women) will compete in the recurve bow category, in both individual and team competitions.

At the previous Pan Ams in Rio de Janeiro in 2007, Canada won silver in both the men’s and women’s team competitions.

The men’s team will be comprised of two members with Olympic Games experience.  Jay Lyon, a 25 year-old seasoned veteran with four World Championships and a 10th place finish in Beijing, is coming off a record 5th place finish in the men’s Individual Recurve Bow category at the 2011 World Championships – the highest ranking for a Canadian recurve archer since the introduction of match play.  Joining Lyon is his 2008 Olympic teammate Crispin Duenas, as well as newcomer Patrick Rivest-Bunster who just competed in his first World Championships.  Both Jay Lyon and Crispin Duenas were on the team that won a silver medal at the 2007 Pan Ams in Rio.  To qualify for the 2011 Pan Am Games, the men’s recurve team finished second behind a powerful American team at the 2010 Pan Am Archery Championships, which was held at the Pan Am Games venue in Guadalajara. The team included Duenas and alternate Phillippe Arsenault, with Duenas winning a bronze medal in the men’s individual recurve category, defeating Serrano of Mexico who was 4th at the 2008 Olympic Games.

The women’s team features 2008 Olympian Marie-Pier Beaudet who will be competing with Kateri Vrakking and rookie Vanessa Lee.  Beaudet and Vrakking both competed on the silver medal winning team at the 2007 Pan Am Games in Rio.  As well, Beaudet and Vrakking were members of the recurve women’s team that captured the bronze medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, while alternate Alana MacDougall was the 3rd member of the Commonwealth Games team.   To qualify forthe 2011 Pan Am Games, the women’s recurve team finished 4th at the 2010 Pan American Archery Championships, therefore earning quota spots for a full women’s team for the 2011 Pan American Games. Beaudet, Vrakking and MacDougall were members of the 2010 Pan Am Championships team.

“The Pan Am Games provides a great competitive opportunity for our archers.  We have a talented team that will be vying for the medal podium. We want to build on this experience and success as we head into the Olympic year,” stated Joan MacDonald, 2012 Olympic Head Coach.

One of the largest teams in its history, a total of 213 members, will make up the Canadian team which will compete at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, from November 12 to 20, 2011.

On the grassroots side, the CPC is marking Sports Day with the launch of a new online portal, www.paralympic.ca/getinvolved, with information on getting involved in parasport, whether as a coach, athlete, guide, official, volunteer or as a teacher, parent or health care provider.

About Team Canada at the Guadalajara 2011 Parapan American Games

The Canadian delegation includes 126 athletes, seven guides and 80 officials (coaches, managers, support staff, mission staff).

Canada's Chef de Mission is Rob Needham (CPC's Executive Director, Sport) and Assistant Chef de Mission is Jennifer Larson (CPC's Director of Sport).

"The Parapan American Games represent a crucial stage in the athlete development pathway, providing invaluable international multi-sport Games experience," said Needham. "Every Canadian athlete will be representing their country proudly in Guadalajara."

"These Games are a building block towards future Games and as such, Team Canada includes a mix of veteran athletes with previous Paralympic experience, along with some younger, developing athletes looking to compete in their first international multi-sport Games."

Future Games athletes for which athletes are preparing include the London 2012 Paralympic Games, the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games and the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

For some team sports, Guadalajara serves as a direct qualifier for the London 2012 Paralympic Games, including Wheelchair Basketball and Sitting Volleyball. For individual sports, Guadalajara is one of multiple international competitions at which athletes can qualify leading up to the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Canada will compete in 11 of the 13 sports in Guadalajara: Archery, Athletics, Boccia, Cycling, Goalball, Judo, Sitting Volleyball (men's team), Swimming, Table Tennis, Wheelchair Basketball (men's and women's teams) and Wheelchair Tennis.
